In my not so humble opinion

On the passing of my cat, Pasha

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We called him our evil overlord, but our cat, Pasha, has passed on. He was on a roll lately; he killed a mouse a day for the past three days, bringing his trophy to the same spot outside the window for me to see. Except today, after he jumped up to be let in, his heart threw a clot into his legs, and he couldn’t get up again. We brought him to the vet, but there was really no option that could lead to a good outcome. We had to let him go while he was still glorious.

We found him at the MSPCA, a marvelous little manticore with a sign on the cage that said he played too rough. The sign did not mention that someone had cut his whiskers short. Who exactly was playing rough?

When he was little, he would fly up your back and perch on your shoulders. While I still kept goldfish, he was fascinated by them. As I changed the water and cleaned the tank, he would sit on my shoulders and try to reach the fish. Sometimes he would lounge on top of the fishtank, hoping.

He learned to hunt outside, and he did his job well.  He chased the squirrels, caught a few birds, and killed many mice, too many to boast about.  Possibly because of his early abuse, he was short-tempered, and it took years before he would let you pet anything but his head. And only a fool would try to sink a hand into his fluffy belly. But as he mellowed, he grew more affectionate, especially in the evenings. Somehow he trained me so that before I was allowed to fall asleep, I had to lie on my back so he could sit on my chest. It was so soothing to feel his breathing against my breathing.

Now our sweet kitty, Mucha (Moo-sha), has the house to herself. He mostly  bossed her around, but they have also exchanged a few licks on the head. I’m glad the cats could be nice to each other. I’m glad I have lots of pictures of them to look at. I’m glad he was such a magnificent creature. But mostly, I’m sad. I want my cat back.

Aside

Now that the hostas have leafed out, the cats have cozy places to shelter from the rain. So I’m glad they can stay relatively dry, but I’m also glad that they get a bit of a “rain shampoo”. Because, that’s … Continue reading

Enjoy the storm

We’ve had two bands of showers pass through so far, and now it’s quiet. There’s a pot of braised short ribs in the oven.  Windows are shut. The stray bits outside are collected. We’re just waiting for the real Irene to storm through overnight.

My actual votes for the 2011 Hugo

So here’s the vote I cast yesterday morning for this year’s Hugos. I would feel bad about handing out No Awards, but then I remember what I chore a lot of these stories were.

In which I confess to watching TV

I finally found a way to get me interested in watching TV — connect a computer to it. Is that so wrong?

My brain is not happy in this heat

I got a good bout of writing done this morning, before it got too hot to think. Sorry none of that writing is going to appear here. (Goes off to hide in the air-conditioning.)

Got a toy for the TV and I hope to ditch the cable bill

Remember when I said we downloaded Game of Thrones to watch? The whole time I was thinking, Where’s that little mini PC I ordered from Dell? And then I thought, It’s a good thing that its shipment was so delayed I couldn’t expect it until after Readercon because turning it into a Boxee is going to be a huge distraction.

Well, it arrived today.

And I’m distracted.

Still in recovering from Readercon mode

Oh, to hell with it. I don’t feel like writing about Readercon tonigh

I survived Readercon and all I got was more books to read

I survived Readercon by spending most of my time writing and socializing. I also went to some panels, bought a couple books, went to a couple kaffeeklatches, and heard a couple readings. I’ll post my notes after I’ve looked up names, etc.

Readercon is also a great excuse to go out for Sichuan food. It was just the two of us at Chilli Garden on Friday, and we pulled together a Gang of Six to go to Sichuan Gourmet on Saturday. It was especially awesome to have a guest for dinner who could place our order in Mandarin! Of course, you probably already know the big news of the weekend, but I’m going to make you jump over the break anyway.

Four lines, one excuse

Tonight I’m feeling sleep deprived,
And so this blog has not arrived.
If this excuse should sound contrived,
I’m blowing off writing a proper post and I really don’t care how this last line should be derived.
