“The Occupation of the Architect“, by Jason Heller starts off with a conceit that pulled me in:
The buildings pulled themselves out of the ground one morning and decided to speak.
With the buildings personified, I wanted to see what they would do. So they open out and open out, and take off in a nicely unexpected direction. The story looks short, but it’s bigger on the inside than it seems on the outside.
Unlike this post.
Great piece, man! I like when buildings don’t do what they should — from Terry Gilliam to Roy Andersson (a hilarious Swede director who made one off my favorite films, Songs From the Second Floor.) Maybe you’ve read House of Leaves…? That’s got the all-time freakiest, shapeshifting house, absolutely huge on the inside, people rapelling into bottomless closets, etc. Anyway, real glad I came across this story today, and look forward to reading more. All the success that you’re having inspires me to tinker around with some old flash pieces of my own. Best — J
I’m so pleased if this blog helped you stumble on the story, but I can’t take credit for it. I like the sound of House of Leaves. Thanks!
