Sneaking up on the wildlife

Squirrel sees me back
Squirrel on the alert

The funniest part of going out to fill the bird feeders is the frantic flutter of dozens of little brown wings taking fright. It’s like all the sparrows at once are shouting, Cheese it! But not everyone flees so fast.

Sometimes a squirrel will be reluctant to take off. This one kept eating. Then he looked up. Then he sat up. He sat there a good while, clearly wishing he could go back to eating. Then I moved, and he took off.

I also see a pair of Downy Woodpeckers that are awfully fond of the suet feeders. The male is especially bold; he let me get almost close enough to touch him. Look how fat he is!
