I can’t say I think they’re as cute as bees or ladybugs, but I approve of spiders. I approve of the beautiful marbling on this Cross Orb Weaver I found on a recent sunny day. I approve of her broad, round web. And I approve of her hard work, still catching fat juicy flies. Yum?
I can say “she” because with orb weavers, it’s the female spinning the classic image, straight out of a Charlotte’s Web in your garden. This one was plying her trade in a shaggy, weedy corner. I’ve also seen similar ones hanging out by the compost bins. Smart.
With those skinny legs and bulbous body, this spider is definitely not cute. But like so many things that are easy to overlook, when you get close enough to really see, she’s covered with beauty.
