How do you like my elaborate, highly asthetic bird bath? It’s a frisbee on a compost tumbler, with a couple sticks thrown in for the birds to get a grip on. Until yesterday, it was a clay saucer, but I broke it trying to wedge it out of the ice. That’s because my high-tech solution for keeping the ice away is a trip out back with a teakettle full of hot water.
In winter, birds will eat snow, but just as for hikers, their bodies have to heat it up again. So if you’re feeding birds, it’s important to give them fresh water as well.

Today, though, the birds are ignoring the water. The rain might have something to do with that. Instead, lots of wet sparrows are mobbing the suet feeder.
I also saw a junco this morning, and both Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal have been cheeping around. And everyone is too wet to want a bird bath.
