One of the writers I like but haven’t read nearly enough of is an Israeli writer named Etgar Karet. There was a very good reading of one of his stories at end of the latest episode of This American Life, called “Happy Accident“.
There’s nothing uncanny in this one, but it’s quite affecting. What caught my attention was the narrator being self-aware enough to realize he is shouting at the cab driver because of what he’s going through, but he shouts at the cab driver anyway. As for what he’s going through, it’s a slice of life during a difficult time.
Also the show being This American Life, the whole episode is worth a listen. Since it’s their annual pledge episode, I suggest you throw them a shekel. Maybe not the 2,000 shekels mentioned in the story, but something.
