Closing the 2007 list

Hi, I’m Pam, and I’m a Getting Things Done addict. I just haven’t blogged about it here, as so many others are doing a better job explaining GTD than I could ever do. Instead, I’d like to talk about the things I’m not going to do.

One great lesson of GTD is that you can think of more interesting, challenging, rewarding things you want to do than you can do in ten lifetimes. Then there’s probably another ten or twenty lifetimes’ worth of all the stuff you only think you should do. You can manage your lists and negotiate your commitments, but the real point is to make peace with the things you’re not doing right now. Most of that goes on the Someday/Maybe list. The list that rarely gets discussed is the list of things you’re not going to do. Ever.

Well, as I keep adding to the list of interesting, challenging, rewarding books being released this year, I look at my Books of 2007 page and realize–I’m not going to read the rest of them. Oh, there’s a few that I still have good reason to read, but only a few. It’s time to close the 2007 list and move on. The 2008 list can keep growing, but I can tell you right now, I’m not going to read them all.

So how long is your reading list?
