Birds from a sunnier day

Hairy(?) Woodpecker

Woodpecker and chickadee

Here’s some pictures I’ve been saving for a rainy day (and yes, it poured today and it’s going to keep pouring, they say).  For some reason, I get excited when I see a woodpecker visiting the cat entertainment center bird feeders; I guess it seems more “woodsy” than a sparrow. Based on its size, compared to that chickadee, I think it’s a hairy woodpecker, though it could be a downy woodpecker. Either way, it’s pilose.

The other bird that always startles me, and cracks me up with the way it feeds upside down, is the White-Breasted Nuthatch. Thing is, I thought both of these birds were insect eaters, not seed eaters. But I do have to confess that I’ve spotted moths in the seed, so it’s possible their grubs are what the birds are after. Ew. That black oil sunflower seed has more variety in it than I thought.
