50 degrees in October feels like the first intimation of winter. 50 degrees in March feels like a heat wave.
The whole world seems to be breathing out one big sigh of relief. The snow is melting, the ice is gone, vast swaths of ground have reappeared. Granted, most of the soil doesn’t look so great, being all muddy and clotted with last fall’s dead plants. You have to get a bit closer to see the new ones.

The first crocus are up. The snowdrops that have been poking up in ones and twos now cluster in threes and fours, spreading creamy white wings.

That’s it for winter. We got that last nor’easter out of the system, and it’s warm again. Time for mud, mud, glorious mud.
