On a snail hunt the other night, I caught these snails leaving interesting trails. You can see clearly how they actually lifted bits of their feet as the waves moved through them. If you have aquarium snails, or watch a snail climbing up a window, you can see for yourself how the waves in a snail’s foot carry it forward.
There’s some good diagrams of snail locomotion in this paper about the effect of neurotransmitters in snails. Sounds dry, but read at least the methods section. I can’t shake the image of Russian scientists injecting snails. They were drugging snails? Did this have anything to do with the infamous NASA scientists drugging spiders? Like what, fifty years later?
