Re: How High the Moon

How High the Moon,” by Patrick Lundrigan is a charming story in which a couple argue over who is a robot and who programmed whom. It sounds almost like a game they’re playing with each other. But if one of them really is a robot, maybe they’re programmed to say that. Shades of Blade Runner.

It reminds me of a scenario I read recently in Freedom Evolves, by Daniel Dennett. Suppose Beth has been brainwashed to be in more control of herself, or more moral, or whatever. Then she’s told that she was brainwashed to be that way. Given the choice to go back, she says she’s happy the way she is. But she’s programmed to say that. Is she really free to choose?
