Hummingbird moth

Hummingbird moth on butterfly bush

There are bugs that make you say, What’s that? And there are bugs that make you say, Oh my god! I didn’t know anything like that existed! This Nessus Sphynx moth is like the size of my thumb, and it looks like a tiny hummingbird. I don’t exactly have a high-speed camera, but I could swear the motion of its wings is the same figure eight that hummingbirds use.

Maybe because they are so strange, they have lots of names. They’re called hummingbird moth, also called sphynx moth, also called — well, if you notice those fins on its tail, you might want to call it a furry lobster moth.

Stranger things, Horatio, stranger things.
