Now that the 2010 Hugo winners have been announced, I always find the most interesting part is poring over the voting tabulations. It’s an instant run-off election, and you can see the various nominees rising and falling round by round. This year, I did a lot better at picking winners than voting for them.
Novel: The Windup Girl TIE WITH The City & the City
My vote: Julian Comstock
My pick: The Windup Girl
When I cast my vote, I thought it was a toss-up between that and The City & the City. I didn’t know you’re allowed to have a tie!
Novella: “Palimpsest”
My vote: God Engines
My pick: “Act One”
When I cast my vote, I thought any of them deserved to win. In the run-off voting, you can see “Palimpsest” and The God Engines duking it out with The Women of Nell Gwynne‘s.
Novelette: “The Island”
My vote: “Eros, Philia, Agape”
My pick: “The Island”
When I cast my vote, I never would have guessed how close “Overtime” would have come to winning.
Short Story: “Bridesicle”
My vote: “Non-Zero Probabilities”
My pick: “Bridesicle”
When I cast my vote, I had my say. Since then, I’ve come to think better of “Bridesicle”, so it’s a bit of a relief to see it win.
So how’s my scorecard? Votes: 0/4. Picks 3/4. Pretty good!
