More fruit for squirrels to wish they could steal

Never mind the late lamented peaches. More flowers are coming, promising more fruits. The raspberries are still going steadily, and the eggplants are just beginning to flower. Since raspberries have thorns and raw eggplant is bitter, I just might get to eat some of these.

So much for tree-ripened peaches

I was trying so hard to be patient, but no such luck with the squirrels. This morning, I looked out and saw only two peaches left. And it wasn’t the wind that did it.

Compost checkup

It’s not a pretty sight, but you gotta check out the compost in a tumbler and see how it’s doing. I first looked in about ten days after I filled the tumbler. There were some dry spots and it had just a whiff of ammonia. Time to make some adjustments.

Squash bees are back!

The volunteer winter squash are back, and so are the squash bees. I found several male blossoms on the plant, all folded up and limp. One of them turned out to be a squash bee dorm, with two bees curled up in the bottom.

Tomato!

My first tomato of the year! My, that ripened quickly. Just a few days ago it was barely blushing. Here it is fresh-picked for its trophy photo. There it goes, off to the kitchen. Bye-bye, tomato. Yum.

Coneflowers are buzzing

Coneflowers are buzzing. Buzzing with bumblebees. Buzzing with honeybees. Buzzing with … flies? That doesn’t even look like a syrphid fly. But you know what? There’s lots of coneflowers for everyone.
