A hint of orchids

Orchid beginning to open

It’s time for the annual orchid tease.  Almost as if it can feel the moisture and sun of the January thaw outside, it’s peeling just the edge of one petal open, teasingly hinting at the first flower of the year.

But then the real tease is the January thaw. You get a few days of mild weather, after weeks so cold that you’re calling 40 degrees “warm.” The snow melts, maybe a bit of rain hits. And next thing you know, you’re back in the deep freeze.

But the orchids will be flowering.
